Background

  • Advancing European U-Space Research

A large-scale European research initiative was initiated under the SESAR Joint Undertaking to advance the safe integration of uncrewed aerial systems and emerging air mobility concepts into European airspace.

  • Objective

The goal was to demonstrate how crewed and uncrewed aircraft could operate safely and efficiently within shared airspace and to validate the technical, regulatory, and operational models for Europe’s future
U-space architecture.

Challenge

Bridging the Gap Between ATM and U-Space

  • The main challenge was to design a research and demonstration program that could address both the technological and operational gaps between traditional air traffic management and new digital U-space services.

Complex Coordination and Compliance

  • The initiative required interoperability across borders, alignment with European regulatory frameworks, and the delivery of demonstrable results under strict funding and reporting requirements.

  • Managing a consortium of multiple partners from aviation, telecommunications, software, and research sectors demanded clear strategy, structured communication, and effective funding management.

Goal

  • Acquisition of large funding amount to enable client’s innovation strategy to leverage existing Air Traffic Management components to achieve rapid market readiness.

Approach

Strategic Alignment and Proposal Design

  • Through focused innovation management and funding strategy work, the project was structured to fully align with European research priorities and the SESAR roadmap for U-space development.

  • The initiative built on earlier research programs that had validated digital airspace management concepts in mixed airspace environments.

Expanding Scope and Demonstration Readiness

  • The follow-up project extended its focus to dense urban environments, including electric vertical take-off and landing operations and beyond visual line-of-sight drone missions.

  • By combining existing Air Traffic Management infrastructure with digital U-space components, the program created a scalable and replicable model for future airspace integration.

Using Established Frameworks for R&D Activities

  • An existing framework for research and development activities was applied to ensure structured execution from the outset.

Result

Flagship for European U-Space Development

  • The initiative became a flagship reference for European air mobility and U-space research.

  • It demonstrated the safe coexistence of crewed and uncrewed aircraft, validated a shared data environment, and defined common standards for communication, situational awareness, and real-time information exchange.

Operational and Strategic Results

  • The results were recognized by European institutions as a major contribution to the modernization of Air Traffic Management and the foundation for future U-space implementation.

  • The client benefited from access to a strong collaborative network and dedicated funding, enabling the development of capabilities that were fully aligned with both program priorities and internal strategic objectives.

Accelerating Market Readiness Through Funding

  • By leveraging the client’s existing Air Traffic Management portfolio, the solution achieved rapid market readiness with limited development effort, reducing time to market while maintaining operational and regulatory alignment.

  • In addition, the successful validations and results were disseminated to enable successful customer acquisition with a strong European reference.

Key Insight

  • Successfully participating in European funding programs such as the SESAR Joint Undertaking requires a precise balance between technical excellence, strategic alignment, and stakeholder coordination.

  • Understanding how to structure proposals, build effective consortia, and align objectives with European innovation priorities is essential for securing funding and long-term program success.

  • Such initiatives demonstrate how funding frameworks and collaborative networks can be used to accelerate R&D, validate technologies, and fast-track market readiness.

  • The ability to navigate and utilize these programs effectively provides a decisive advantage for organizations seeking to bring innovative solutions to operational maturity under real-world conditions.
